SDE Apprentice - Backend & Android

About this role

Origin builds general-purpose autonomous robots for US construction sites. Operators control these robots through Android apps that rely on backend services for robot state, telemetry and job data. The apprentice works mostly on the Python backend (APIs, databases) and regularly on the Kotlin Android app, shipping production code with mentorship from senior engineers. It is a six-month contract-to-hire role in Bengaluru, on-site, and suits recent graduates with strong fundamentals who learn quickly.

What you'll do

  • Build and maintain Python (FastAPI) backend services, including async endpoints and background tasks
  • Design and integrate REST and WebSocket APIs for robot telemetry, operator commands and job data
  • Design database schemas and write efficient queries in PostgreSQL or SQLite
  • Build features and fix bugs in the native Kotlin Android app used by operators, including HMI screens and Room storage
  • Debug issues end to end, from the Android screen through the API to the robot service
  • Write tests, take part in code reviews and document your work

What you need

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, IT, Electronics or a related field
  • 0–1 year of experience; internships, open-source work and substantial personal projects count
  • Strong CS fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, OOP, OS and networking basics
  • Proficiency in at least one of Python, Kotlin or Java, and willingness to work in both Python and Kotlin
  • Built at least one REST API with any framework, plus working knowledge of SQL
  • Comfortable with Git and the Linux command line
