How real ATS systems treat your resume, and how this checker works

Full write-up with sources: How ATS software really screens fresher resumes in India. How it compares with Jobscan, Resume Worded, Teal and others: free ATS checkers compared.

We built this checker from how applicant tracking systems actually work (vendor documentation from Workday, Greenhouse, SAP SuccessFactors and the Textkernel parser, recruiter surveys, and Indian campus-hiring rules), not from “ATS score” folklore. Three things decide whether a fresher gets shortlisted, so you get four separate results instead of one blended number:

  • Eligibility. Most rejections happen on form answers and college data: batch, degree and branch, CGPA or “60% throughout”, backlogs, education gaps. No rewording fixes these, so they're shown as pass / fail / check-yourself flags, never averaged into a score.
  • Readable by an ATS. Parsers turn your PDF into fields. Two columns, letter-spaced headings, icon fonts, tables, dates split over two lines and links hidden behind words are documented ways this breaks. We show the exact text we found.
  • Resume strength (no job needed, out of 100): readability 20, evidence of real work 25 (internships with dates, projects with a stack, a link and an outcome, verifiable achievements), spelling 15, impact of your bullets 15, skills shown in use 10, concise and clean 15. Internships and spelling carry the most weight because they have the strongest evidence behind them. Bands: Excellent 90+, Strong 80+, Fair 60+.
  • Match for a job (out of 100): required skills 50, preferred 15, job title 15, degree and experience 10, soft skills 10, checked requirement by requirement the way AI screeners do. A skill used in a dated internship or project bullet counts in full; one only in your skills list counts 60%; repeating a keyword earns nothing. “Any of Java / Python / C++” is one requirement.

ATS resume tips for freshers

  • Use one column, standard headings (Education, Skills, Projects, Experience) and a common font.
  • Tailor the skills and project bullets to each job: mirror the exact words in the job description.
  • Lead every bullet with a verb and a result: “Built a React dashboard used by 300 students”.
  • Put your strongest 2–3 projects first, with the tech stack and a GitHub link.
  • Keep it to one page and export a text-based PDF. Name it like FirstName_LastName_Resume.pdf.

Frequently asked questions

What is an ATS?

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is the software companies use to collect and filter applications. Recruiters search it by keywords from the job description, so a resume that doesn't mention the right skills may never be seen, even if you're a good fit.

Is this ATS checker really free?

Yes. There's no sign-up and no limit. The check runs entirely in your browser, so your resume is never uploaded or stored anywhere.

Do ATSs automatically reject resumes?

Rarely for formatting. Greenhouse, Workday and Ashby document that their AI ratings don't reject anyone automatically. Rejections usually come from eligibility answers (batch, CGPA, branch, backlogs, years) and online tests. The often-quoted "75% of resumes are rejected by ATS" comes from a 2012 sales pitch, not a study.

What's a good score?

For resume strength, 80+ is strong and 90+ excellent; a typical fresher resume with projects but few results lands around 60–75. For a job match, aim for 75+, but read the requirement table: AI screeners check each must-have, so a missing required skill matters more than the number.

Why is my score lower than on other checkers?

Many checkers count keyword overlap and reward stuffing, which is why the same resume can score 68 on one and 82 on another. This one gives no points for repeating keywords and shows exactly what to fix.

What does "Not eligible" mean?

The job's batch, degree/branch, marks cut-off or minimum experience rules you out based on what your resume says. These are checked on the application form or by your college before anyone reads a resume, so no wording change fixes them. Backlog rules are shown as "check yourself" because resumes don't state them.

Should I add every missing keyword?

Only add skills you genuinely have. Put them where they show real use, such as a project or internship bullet, not only in the skills list. Recruiters and interviewers will ask about them.

PDF or Word: which is better for ATS?

A text-based PDF (exported from Word or Google Docs) works for almost every ATS. Avoid scanned PDFs, images, text boxes, tables and two-column layouts.
