Why career pages use these tools at all

Companies rarely build their own hiring system. They use an applicant tracking system (ATS), which collects applications, sorts them and lets recruiters move candidates through stages. Workday, Greenhouse, Lever and SmartRecruiters are four widely used ones.

The tool matters because it shapes what you see: how long the form is, whether you need an account, and how you check your status. The company still decides who gets shortlisted. The software only stores and organises your details.

Features and layouts change over time and differ company to company, so treat what follows as general patterns, not guarantees.

How to recognise each system from the URL

A quick look at the web address tells you which tool you are on. This helps you know what to expect before you start.

  • Workday: the address usually contains *myworkdayjobs.com* or *wd* followed by a number. Expect an account and a longer form.
  • Greenhouse: often *greenhouse.io* or a company page that embeds it. Usually a single-page form with resume upload and a few questions.
  • Lever: typically *jobs.lever.co*. Generally a short, clean form, often without a mandatory account.
  • SmartRecruiters: usually *smartrecruiters.com* or *jobs.smartrecruiters.com*. Often lets you apply with a profile or a resume upload.

Workday: the account-first system

Workday is the one that most often makes freshers feel lost. You normally create an account per company, so you may end up with several logins. That is normal, not a sign something is wrong.

Many Workday forms offer to read your resume and fill fields automatically. It is helpful, but the parsing is imperfect. Always check every field, especially dates, degree names and marks.

Use one email address and a password manager or a simple notebook so you can find your logins later. Save a note of the job ID for each application.

  1. Create the account with an email you check daily.
  2. Upload your resume and let the form pre-fill, then correct every mistake.
  3. Fill education, experience and project sections fully, even if some repeat your resume.
  4. Answer the voluntary and eligibility questions honestly.
  5. Review the summary page, submit, and look for a confirmation message or email.

Greenhouse, Lever and SmartRecruiters: quicker forms

These three tend to be lighter. Greenhouse and Lever commonly ask for your name, contact details, resume and links such as LinkedIn or GitHub, plus a few role-specific questions. Some include a cover letter box, which is often optional.

SmartRecruiters may let you build a short profile and reuse it. Read each screen though, as companies add their own custom questions.

Short forms invite rushed answers. Slow down on the free-text questions, because a recruiter may actually read those. Two or three honest, specific sentences beat a generic paragraph.

  • Use a PDF resume unless the form asks otherwise.
  • Name the file sensibly, like *Firstname_Lastname_Resume.pdf*.
  • Add working links to GitHub or portfolio projects and test them first.
  • Check required fields marked with an asterisk before pressing submit.

Prepare once, apply many times

Most of the pain comes from typing the same things again and again. Keep one document with your details ready to copy: full name as on your certificates, phone, email, college, degree, graduation year, marks or CGPA format, skills and project descriptions.

Make sure your resume is readable by software: simple layout, standard headings, no text inside images or tables. You can test this with the ATS resume checker.

Also be clear about your batch. Eligibility is often tied to graduation year, so check the posting against your own year, for example the 2027 batch jobs or 2028 batch jobs pages if that is you.

Pay matters too, but varies widely. In Hirastra's sample of 160 recent fresher listings (estimates, not official), the full-time median was about ₹13.0 LPA across 137 roles, with a range of ₹4–35 LPA. Treat that as context, not a promise for any one role. Our salaries page has more detail.

  • A text file with your standard answers
  • Resume PDF and a backup copy
  • Marksheets and ID details nearby, in case you are asked
  • A spreadsheet to track applications

Track your applications and follow up

After submitting, you should usually see a confirmation screen or email. If you get neither, log in to check whether the application shows as submitted. Check your spam folder too.

Keep a simple sheet with the company, role, date, link, login email and status. This stops duplicate applications and helps when a recruiter calls and you need to remember which role it was.

Career page applications work best alongside other routes. A referral can help your profile get noticed, so read how to get a referral as a fresher. To find openings in the first place, today's listings and the off-campus drives page collect verified ones.

Do not expect instant replies. Timelines vary a lot by company, and silence does not always mean rejection.

Stay safe: what genuine career pages look like

Always reach the application through the company's official website or a link you can verify. Check the address carefully, because fake pages copy real designs.

A genuine employer never charges a fee for applying, interviews, training kits, laptops or offer letters. If someone asks for money, stop. Read how to spot fake job offers in India for warning signs.

Be careful about what you share. A real application asks for resume details and contact information. Bank passwords, OTPs or card details are never needed to apply.

  • Payment requests of any kind are a red flag.
  • Offers via WhatsApp or free email domains deserve suspicion.
  • Pressure to act within hours is a common scam tactic.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate account for every Workday company?

Usually yes, as Workday accounts are typically tied to each employer's site. Use one email and keep a record of your logins so you can return to check status.

Will the ATS automatically reject my resume?

Software mostly parses and organises applications. Recruiters or company rules decide shortlisting. Still, use a simple, clean format so your details are read correctly.

Should I apply through a career page or a referral?

Both are worth using. A referral can help, but a career page application is often still required. Where possible, do the two together.

Can I edit an application after submitting?

It varies by company and tool. Some let you withdraw or update; many do not. Review everything carefully before you submit, and contact the recruiter through official channels if a correction is vital.
