Why referrals work

Companies trust candidates their employees vouch for, and many run referral programmes that encourage employees to refer. A referral doesn't guarantee a job, since you still clear the same rounds, but it often moves your application ahead of the pile.

Who to ask

  • Alumni from your college working at the company: the warmest connection you have. Search LinkedIn for the company and your college name.
  • People in the same role you're applying for, especially those who joined as freshers in the last two or three years.
  • People you've interacted with: at hackathons, meetups, open-source projects or online communities.

Before you ask: have these ready

  1. A specific opening: the job title and link (or job ID) from the company's careers page. "Any job" requests rarely get help.
  2. A one-page resume tailored to that role. Check it with our ATS resume checker.
  3. Two lines on why you fit: a relevant project or skill.

A message that gets replies

Keep it short, specific and easy to say yes to:

"Hi {Name}, I'm {Your name}, a final-year B.Tech CSE student at {College} (your alma mater too!). I'm applying for the {Role} opening at {Company} (Job ID {ID}). I've built {one relevant project} using {tech}. Would you be open to referring me? I've attached my resume and can share anything else you need. Thank you!"

  • Send a connection request with a short note first; message once they accept.
  • Follow up once after four or five days if there's no reply; then move on politely.
  • Ask several people at different companies, not ten people at one company.

After someone agrees

  • Send exactly what they ask for: resume, job ID, email and phone, quickly.
  • Thank them, and tell them how it goes: people who refer love hearing about results.
  • Keep preparing: a referral gets you in the door; the rounds decide the rest.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fresher get a referral without knowing anyone?

Yes. Alumni from your college are often happy to help, and polite, specific requests to people in your target role get replies more often than you'd expect.

Is it okay to ask for a referral on LinkedIn?

Yes, it's common practice. Be specific about the opening, keep it short, and attach or link your resume.

Does a referral guarantee an interview?

No, but it often gets your application reviewed sooner. You still need to meet the eligibility criteria and clear the rounds.
