About this role
This role is on the Capacity Restoration Team within AWS's Backbone, Enterprise, Regional Engineering organisation, which restores out-of-service network capacity across Amazon's backbone and metro networks. The engineer troubleshoots and restores DWDM optical capacity, diagnosing issues such as fiber faults, amplifier problems and optical impairments. They also write code, preferably in Python, to automate restoration work such as span loss validation and wavelength re-provisioning. The role includes building metrics and dashboards, documenting runbooks and joining on-call rotations for follow-the-sun coverage. It suits someone with an electrical or communications background and hands-on optical network experience. The job is based in Hyderabad.

What you'll do
- Troubleshoot and restore out-of-service optical capacity across DWDM backbone and metro networks
- Diagnose optical impairments and isolate physical-layer faults using OTDR, OSA and power meter readings
- Build and improve automation for optical link and device restoration
- Develop scripts to parse and correlate optical alarms from network management systems
- Create and maintain operational metrics, monitors and health dashboards
- Document systems and runbooks, and take part in on-call rotations and design reviews
What you need
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or experience designing digital communication systems
- Experience in a scripting language such as Python, Ruby or Perl
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals
- Experience in a Linux or Unix environment
- 1+ years of experience in optical network engineering, DWDM operations or optical transport systems
- Understanding of DWDM and fiber optic fundamentals, including amplification, coherent detection, attenuation, chromatic dispersion and PMD
- Experience reading and understanding complex code
