About this role
Azul's Falcon is an optimizing JIT compiler in Azul Platform Prime that turns hot Java bytecode into optimized machine code and is built on LLVM. This role focuses on making the existing, production-proven compiler generate faster code. The engineer finds where generated code is slower than it should be and fixes it in the optimizer and code generator, working on real customer workloads. It is a full-time position in a distributed team, with locations listed as Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai or remote in India. It suits an engineer with compiler or low-level performance experience.

What you'll do
- Analyze performance of Java benchmarks and customer workloads and trace code gaps to their root cause in the compiler
- Implement and improve optimizations in Falcon's middle end and back end, such as inlining, loop optimizations, vectorization and redundancy elimination
- Improve code generation for x86_64 and AArch64
- Write tests and benchmarks that prove improvements and guard against regressions
- Contribute changes upstream to LLVM where it makes sense
What you need
- 2+ years of professional experience in compilers, JIT compilers or low-level performance engineering
- Strong C++ design and coding skills
- Solid understanding of compiler optimization theory: SSA, data flow analysis, loop transformations
- Ability to read assembly and reason about instruction sequence performance
- Nice to have: LLVM IR/passes or other optimizing compiler experience, profilers (perf, VTune), JVM knowledge, MSc or PhD
